Ruto Declares August 27 ‘Katiba Day’ to Mark 2010 Constitution

President Ruto has officially declared August 27, 2025, and every subsequent August 27 thereafter, to be observed as “Katiba Day.” This is in commemoration of the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya.

This declaration came in a presidential proclamation released on Monday morning. Ruto said the day will serve as an annual anniversary of the historic moment in August 2010. In the 2010 period during the late President Mwai Kibaki’s tenure, when Kenya ushered in a new constitutional order.

“Katiba Day shall be observed throughout the territory of Kenya and all our diplomatic missions abroad as a day dedicated to renewing our shared commitment to the ideals of our Constitution by fostering national dialogue on constitutionalism, governance, and the rule of law,” the proclamation stated.

However, the Head of State clarified that Katiba Day will not be a public holiday.

The proclamation directed that while the day will remain a working day, all government institutions across the three arms of government, the two levels of governance, and schools will be required to organize and participate in civic activities aimed at fostering constitutional awareness and public engagement.
