Japan-Dubai Luxury Cars Dock at Lamu Port due to Middle East Conflict

As of March 19, 2026, major cargo vessels are diverting to Lamu Port. This shift follows escalating tensions in the Middle East disrupting global shipping routes.

Ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has affected key corridors. Consequently, routes like the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea have become risky. Therefore, vessels originally bound for Port Jebel Ali are seeking safer alternatives.

Surge in Vehicle Shipments at Lamu

The Kililana terminal at Lamu has recorded increased activity. Notably, it has become a strategic hub for diverted car shipments.

The vessel Grande Florida docked on March 18, 2026. It carried approximately 3,800 luxury vehicles from Yokohama, Japan.

Additionally, MV Grande Auckland delivered 469 brand-new vehicles earlier. These included high-end European brands such as Porsche.

In total, over 4,200 vehicles arrived within one week. Consequently, port operations have intensified significantly.

Storage, Handling, and Job Creation

Authorities are storing the vehicles in port warehouses temporarily. Shipping firms plan to hold them for one to two months.

Meanwhile, operators are monitoring security conditions in the Persian Gulf. Therefore, delays remain likely until stability improves.

The surge has also created local employment opportunities. Youth and drivers from Mombasa are assisting with offloading operations. Thus, the development is boosting short-term economic activity in the region.

Why Shipping Lines Prefer Lamu Port

Shipping companies are increasingly choosing Lamu for strategic reasons. First, the port features deep-water berths with an 18-meter draft.

As a result, it can accommodate large post-Panamax vessels easily. Additionally, its proximity offers a safer alternative to Middle East ports. Moreover, Lamu has the capacity to handle increased cargo volumes. Between January and March 2026, it received over 43 vessels.

Economic and Strategic Implications

The diversion highlights Kenya’s growing role in global logistics. Consequently, Lamu is positioning itself as a regional transshipment hub.
