Tragic Utumishi Girls Fire Kills 16 Students, 74 Injured

A devastating fire at Utumishi Girls Academy has left families grieving across Kenya. The tragedy unfolded around 1:00 AM on Thursday, May 28, 2026, in Gilgil, Nakuru County.

Consequently, authorities confirmed the deaths of 16 students following the deadly dormitory blaze. Additionally, at least 74 other students suffered injuries during the horrifying incident.

Inferno Razes Meline Waithera Dormitory Block

The fire destroyed the Meline Waithera dormitory block inside the school compound. The dormitory housed approximately 220 students from Grade 10, Form Three, and Form Four classes. Consequently, panic spread quickly as students scrambled to escape the raging flames.

Witnesses reported emotional scenes as learners screamed for help during the overnight disaster. Additionally, emergency responders rushed to the school immediately after receiving distress calls.

Emergency Teams Battle Massive Blaze

A multi-agency emergency team responded rapidly to contain the deadly inferno. Firefighters from Naivasha joined officers from the Kenya Defence Forces and National Youth Service.

Additionally, water bowsers arrived to help stop the flames from spreading further. Consequently, responders managed to contain the fire before it reached nearby dormitories and buildings.

Ambulances quickly transported injured students to St. Joseph’s Hospital and St. Mark’s Hospital. Doctors and medical staff immediately began emergency treatment for the survivors.

Government Officials Arrive at School

Senior government officials arrived at the school shortly after the tragedy. These included Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok.

Additionally, Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Mohamed Amin visited the scene alongside homicide investigators.
