Nairobi Demolishes Illegal Billboards Along Redhill Road
The Nairobi County Government has removed over 20 illegal billboards along Redhill Road. The demolition marked a major step in its continued crackdown on unauthorised outdoor advertising.
County Officials Confirm Expanded Enforcement
CEC Member Patrick Mbogo and Chief Officer Patrick Analo confirmed the removal of 21 structures. They noted that the action formed part of Operation Remove Illegal Billboards.
Additionally, they stated that the billboards violated the Physical and Land Use Planning Act (PLUPA) 2019.
County Warns Firms Against Reinstalling Illegal Billboards
Analo said some companies attempted to reinstall the same illegal structures. He warned that such firms will face prosecution.
Moreover, he added that offenders risk losing five times more billboards as punishment.
He also cautioned companies using goons to block officers. He stressed that such interference will trigger further legal action and more removals.
Operation Expands Beyond Redhill Road
The renewed Redhill sweep followed a major November operation. During that exercise, the county removed 275 illegal billboards across Nairobi.
The effort exceeded the initial target of 100. It also covered key corridors, including Mombasa Road, Lang’ata Road, James Gichuru Road, and the Eastern Bypass.
County Emphasises Security and Order on Key Corridors
On the Eastern Bypass, officers cleared all illegal billboards placed on street lighting poles. Analo said the corridor holds strategic importance because it links security training bases and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Therefore, he stressed that visual order and compliance remain essential.
Penalties for Illegal Outdoor Advertising Rise
Analo warned that companies erecting illegal billboards risk fines of up to KSh2 million. They will also incur extra penalties for removals.
He said the county is working with KURA and KeNHA to strengthen surveillance. The collaboration aims to ensure uniform enforcement on national and county roads.
County Plans More Aggressive Enforcement in December
Analo noted that December enforcement will intensify. He said officers will target all remaining illegal billboards.
Furthermore, the county will pursue firms that evade approvals or fail to pay advertising fees.
He added that the operation supports the Governor’s goal of delivering an orderly city.
Residents Urged to Report Illegal Structures
City Hall is urging residents to report suspicious or unapproved structures. Reports can be made through Sub-County offices or the toll-free number 1508.
With more hotspots set for inspection, the county said the cleanup will continue until full compliance is achieved citywide.
