Nairobi Political Turmoil Deepens as MCAs Revive Sakaja Impeachment Bid

Nairobi’s political landscape has once again plunged into uncertainty after MCAs revived a motion to impeach Johnson Sakaja.

Notably, the renewed push began on March 3, 2026, months after an earlier attempt stalled.

70 Signatures Surpass Constitutional Threshold

This time, however, the numbers appear stronger. A bipartisan group of MCAs confirmed they secured 70 signatures.

Therefore, they surpassed the required one-third threshold of 41 members in the 123-seat assembly.

The motion is spearheaded by Waithera Chege and Robert Alai. Moreover, supporters insist momentum continues to build within the House.

22 Charges Intensify Pressure

In addition, the impeachment motion outlines 22 grounds for removal.

  • First, MCAs accuse the governor of gross incompetence and failure to deliver key promises.
  • Secondly, they allege financial mismanagement and delays in bursary disbursement.
  • Furthermore, legislators cite stalled Ward Development Fund allocations.
  • They also blame county leadership for poor garbage collection and deteriorating roads.
  • Similarly, they argue that inadequate street lighting continues to endanger residents.

Beyond service delivery concerns, some charges allege illegal evictions and abuse of office.

Clerk’s Absence Slows Formal Process

However, despite the momentum, procedural delays emerged. On Tuesday evening, MCAs reported that the Clerk was unavailable to receive the motion.sakaja

Consequently, the formal tabling of the impeachment notice stalled. Nevertheless, Speaker Ken Ngondi assured members that verification would proceed the following morning.

Ksh 80 Billion Deal Fuels Discontent

Meanwhile, a controversial Ksh 80 billion cooperation deal with the national government has intensified tensions. Critics argue the agreement transfers key county functions to national oversight.

Specifically, they cite water, infrastructure, and waste management services. As a result, opponents claim the deal undermines devolution and bypassed assembly approval.

Political Context and Next Steps

Previously, national leaders intervened to halt a similar attempt in September 2025. At that time, William Ruto and Raila Odinga facilitated a temporary reprieve. Now, however, MCAs argue that the grace period expired without tangible reforms.

If two-thirds of the assembly vote in favor, the matter will proceed to the Senate for trial. Ultimately, Nairobi faces another high-stakes political showdown with significant governance implications.
