New 66Km Ngong–Suswa Highway Finally Opens After Seven Years
The government has completed the 66-kilometre Ngong–Suswa Highway, giving motorists a new route from Nairobi to the Rift Valley and Nyanza regions. The road passes through Kajiado North and Kajiado West, offering travellers a faster and safer journey.
New Highway Offers an Alternative Route Out of Nairobi
The new corridor provides motorists with a direct option to Narok, Bomet, Kisii, Kericho, and parts of Nyanza. Officials said the highway will ease pressure on the busy Mai Mahiu escarpment road.
They also noted that the improved design enhances safety for travellers.
Project Expected to Boost Regional Connectivity
The State Department for Roads said the new route will improve regional transport. It added that the highway will support trade, tourism, and local community growth. The road offers scenic views and long open stretches ideal for road trips.
Infrastructure Growth Already Visible Along the Route
Interior PS Raymond Omollo said land value along the corridor has increased. He noted that new markets, service centres, and petrol stations are emerging.
He also said the project supports the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
Government Links Project to Wider Road Expansion Drive
The announcement comes a week after the launch of the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit Road. The government also unveiled improvements on the Nairobi–Mai Mahiu–Naivasha route. President William Ruto said the Ksh170 billion project uses a Public-Private Partnership model.
He explained that PPPs help the government deliver major projects without straining the budget.
