Families and Opposition Leaders Honour Gen Z Protest Victims
NAIROBI, Kenya, June 25, 2026 — Prominent opposition leaders, former judicial officials, and grieving families gathered in Nairobi to commemorate victims of the 2024 Gen Z led anti-Finance Bill protests.
The solemn procession brought together Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, James Orengo, and former Chief Justice David Maraga.
The leaders marched alongside families seeking justice for relatives who lost their lives during the historic demonstrations.
Police Block Access to Parliament
The memorial procession faced significant obstacles upon reaching Parliament Road. Heavy police deployment and security barricades blocked access to Parliament grounds. Consequently, mourners could not place their floral tributes inside the precincts.
Instead, families and leaders attached flowers directly onto razor-wire and barbed-wire barricades surrounding the area. Meanwhile, tensions briefly escalated when security officers issued dispersal orders. During the standoff, former Chief Justice Maraga was escorted away by security personnel.
Why June 25 Remains Significant
The anniversary carries deep national significance for many Kenyans. On June 25, 2024, youth-led demonstrations against the Finance Bill reached a dramatic climax when protesters breached Parliament.
Security forces responded to the unrest, leading to fatalities and injuries that sparked nationwide outrage. Two years later, families returned to honor those who died and to ensure their memories remain part of Kenya’s national conversation.
Families Demand Justice and Accountability
During the commemoration, families and political leaders presented several demands.
First, they called for criminal accountability and the prosecution of officers linked to alleged extrajudicial killings and police brutality.
Second, Martha Karua and James Orengo submitted a petition seeking official recognition of June 25 as a national public holiday. Supporters argue the date should serve as a permanent day of remembrance for victims of the protests.
Political Leaders Reaffirm Their Positions
The anniversary also carried political significance. During the event, Kalonzo Musyoka reiterated his opposition to cooperation with the current administration.
