Sakaja Launches Ksh170 Million Scholarship for Secondary School Students

Scholarship Programme to Benefit Learners
The Nairobi County government unveiled a Ksh170 million scholarship targeting secondary school students. Moreover, Governor Johnson Sakaja announced on January 8 that 4,000 learners will benefit in the first phase.

He thanked the Controller of Budget, the Ministry of Education, and the Council of Governors for resolving last year’s impasse. Consequently, scholarships are now anchored within the law, ensuring transparency and accountability in implementation.

According to CECM Brian Mulama, the programme will ease parents’ financial burden while unlocking children’s academic potential.

Expanding Education Infrastructure
Governor Sakaja acknowledged infrastructural challenges facing Nairobi schools. Consequently, he revealed that the county, with national government support, is fast-tracking construction of 6,500 classrooms to reduce congestion.

Over the past two years, his administration invested Ksh1.8 billion to strengthen the education sector. Additionally, Sakaja emphasized commitment to the Dishi na County feeding programme, which has already provided 68 million meals to learners.

Feeding Programme and Future Plans
The Dishi na County model, introduced in 2023, ensures all students access nutritious meals at a nominal fee of Ksh5. Furthermore, payments are facilitated through a Tap2Eat system embedded in a digital NFC watch. In the 2023/24 financial year, Nairobi County spent Ksh1.7 billion on the programme.

Additionally, Ksh400 million was allocated in the 2024/25 supplementary budget to expand coverage. If the School Feeding Policy 2025 is approved, every child in Nairobi’s public schools will receive safe, nutritious meals daily. Ultimately, the initiative will improve education, health, and social protection outcomes across the county.
