Gabriel Magalhaes Ruled Out for Weeks as Arsenal Face Defensive Crisis
Arteta Confirms Major Injury Blow
Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes will miss several weeks after suffering a thigh injury while on international duty with Brazil. Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed the setback on Friday, describing it as a significant blow to the Premier League leaders.
The centre-back picked up the injury during Brazil’s 2-0 friendly win over Senegal at the Emirates Stadium last weekend. He has been a constant figure in Arsenal’s defence, which has conceded only five goals in 11 league games.
“Gabi unfortunately picked up an injury with the Brazilian national team and he’s going to be out for weeks,” Arteta said. He added that Arsenal will conduct another scan next Wednesday to establish a clearer recovery timeline.

Gunners Weigh Replacement Options
Gabriel has built a solid defensive partnership with William Saliba, offering both composure at the back and threat from set pieces. His absence now forces Arteta to rely on alternatives.
Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera are in contention to step in against Tottenham on Sunday, although Arteta warned that Gabriel’s leadership is irreplaceable.
“Every player brings specific qualities, and Gabi’s is his leadership and presence,” Arteta said. “People will step up. We’ve done it before.”
Injury Concerns Pile Up
Arsenal’s defensive issues do not end there. Left-back Riccardo Calafiori, who missed Italy’s recent internationals, has also been struggling.
“He’s been carrying a few things,” Arteta explained. “He hasn’t trained yet, but we’ll assess him in tomorrow’s session.”
Several key players remain sidelined with longer-term issues, including Martin Odegaard, Noni Madueke, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Viktor Gyokeres. Arteta said the final decision on any player’s involvement will be made after Saturday’s training.
North London Derby Looms
Arsenal sit four points clear at the top after their 2-2 draw with Sunderland earlier this month, a result that halted their run of eight consecutive wins without conceding. The Gunners have dominated their home fixtures against Tottenham, losing only once in the Premier League at the Emirates since 1993. However, Spurs arrive with the league’s best away record this season—four wins and a draw from five matches—setting up a fiery North London Derby.
