Tournament Gets Underway in Eldoret
Eldoret is once again hosting top volleyball action as the Kipchumba Karori International Volleyball Tournament kicked off on Friday. The three-day event has attracted 188 teams from Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan.
The tournament features both senior and junior categories, highlighting its growing appeal across the region.
A Tournament With a Rich History
The Kipchumba Karori International Volleyball Tournament began in 1998. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most respected volleyball competitions in East Africa.
Speaking to 254 News during the opening day, Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Vice President Paul Bitok said the tournament continues to expand each year.
“This year’s edition has 188 teams across senior and junior categories,” Bitok said. “It shows how far the tournament has come since it started in 1998.”
Big Teams Take Centre Stage
Attention in the men’s category is firmly on defending champions Equity Volleyball Club. The holders are back in Eldoret aiming to retain their title.
However, they face stiff competition from strong sides including Chema and DCI, among others.
In the women’s category, the spotlight falls on the KCB Women’s Volleyball Team. The side is among the favourites to challenge for top honours.
KSh 1 Million Prize at Stake
Beyond pride and prestige, teams are competing for a KSh 1 million cash prize. Organisers say the reward has raised competition levels across all matches.
Fans are expected to witness intense encounters as teams battle for the top prize.
Platform for Regional Volleyball Growth
The tournament continues to play a key role in nurturing talent. It also promotes regional integration through sport.
With matches running over the next three days, Eldoret is set for thrilling volleyball action as teams chase glory and a place in the tournament’s history.
