Kenya teenage pregnancy survey findings

A new KNBS survey records fewer pregnancies and births among teenage girls, while officials urge targeted investment in adolescent health.

Teenage pregnancy in Kenya has fallen to 11.9 per cent, down from 14.8 per cent in 2022. The figures cover girls aged 15 to 19 who have ever been pregnant.

The 2025/2026 Kenya Mini Demographic and Health Survey also recorded a lower adolescent birth rate. It fell from 73 to 63 births per 1,000 girls in the same age group.

However, significant county differences persist despite the national decline. The survey covered all 47 counties and provides updated indicators for national and county development planning.

Teenage pregnancy disparities across counties

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics official Rosemary Bowen identified counties with some of the highest teenage pregnancy levels. They include Turkana, Samburu, West Pokot, Narok and Kajiado.

Bowen said the findings would help national and county governments identify areas needing greater investment. That includes investment in adolescent health and reproductive services.

Meanwhile, World Health Organization representative in Kenya Neema Kimambo urged policymakers to use the findings to improve services. She highlighted women, children and adolescents, particularly those at risk of being left behind.

Kimambo also cautioned against relying on national averages, which can hide differences between communities. She urged policymakers to identify populations that still face barriers to essential services.
