Kenyan environmental activist Truphena Muthoni has announced an ambitious plan to plant one billion trees within 24 hours.

The proposed nationwide campaign is scheduled for April 22, 2027, to coincide with World Earth Day. Muthoni made the announcement alongside digital creator Mbavu Destroyer and Jimi Cohen.

They presented the initiative as a collective effort to promote environmental conservation and address climate change.mThe plan would require extensive coordination, public participation and logistical support across Kenya.

Campaign Targets All 47 Counties

The organisers aim to mobilise communities across all 47 counties to participate in the proposed tree-planting exercise. Reaching one billion trees in a single day would require an extraordinary level of public involvement.

At the stated target, participants would need to plant approximately 11,574 trees every second throughout the 24-hour period.

That scale would demand coordinated access to seedlings, suitable planting sites, transport, volunteers and monitoring systems.

The organisers have presented the campaign as a nationwide environmental mobilisation effort. Further details about its implementation and how the proposed record attempt will be verified remain important to the plan.

Who Is Truphena Muthoni?

Muthoni rose to international attention through her conservation advocacy, particularly her endurance-based tree-hugging campaigns.

She completed a 72-hour tree-hugging effort in Nyeri County to draw attention to the protection of indigenous trees. Her achievement however, brought wider public recognition and highlighted her environmental activism.

Recognition for Conservation Work

Muthoni has also received a Head of State Commendation, according to reports about her conservation work. She has been associated with Kenya’s national tree-growing campaign, which seeks to increase tree cover and support environmental restoration.

Her proposed 2027 initiative would expand her advocacy from an individual endurance challenge to a large-scale public participation campaign.

A Major Test of Environmental Mobilisation

Planting one billion trees in 24 hours would be an exceptional undertaking. Its success would depend on careful planning, reliable reporting and the survival of the planted seedlings.

Tree planting alone does not guarantee lasting environmental benefits. Appropriate species, suitable locations and continued care are also essential.

As April 22, 2027, approaches, further information about partnerships, county participation and verification procedures will help clarify how the ambitious target could be pursued.
