DCI Nabs Joy Kanini Murder Suspect While Fleeing to Uganda

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has arrested John Nderitu Mureithi, the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of 25-year-old Joy Kanini Gathu. Specifically, detectives from the DCI Homicide Investigations Bureau tracked and ambushed Mureithi, along the Nanyuki-Isiolo Road in Timau, Meru County. Furthermore, he was actively attempting to flee to Uganda at the time of his arrest.


What Investigators Recovered

The evidence seized during the arrest is significant. Specifically, police recovered four mobile phones from the suspect, including the deceased’s handset.

Furthermore, investigators found a blood-stained panga inside his rented house, believed to be the murder weapon.


The Horrifying Details of the Crime

Investigators established a clear sequence of events. Specifically, a fatal confrontation occurred between Mureithi and Joy Kanini on June 9, 2026, inside his house in Ngangarithi Estate, Nyeri.

Furthermore, the suspect dismembered her body to conceal the crime, dumping body parts along the Nyeri-Karatina highway.

Further Discoveries at the Crime Scene

The arrest led to additional forensic work at the property. Specifically, after Mureithi’s arrest, detectives returned to the Ngangarithi Estate property, excavated a septic tank and recovered additional human remains.

The suspect is now booked at Kiganjo Police Station. Specifically, he is expected to face formal murder charges in court on Monday, July 13, 2026, as detectives seek custodial orders.

Furthermore, family members who allegedly funded his escape route also face potential charges for aiding a fugitive.
