Kayole’s “Legend Killer”: BB Bread FC Slice Past Gor Mahia to Reach Mozzart Bet Cup Round of 16
A little-known club from Kayole has shaken Kenyan football again. Fifth-tier side BB Bread FC stunned record champions Gor Mahia with a dramatic 1–0 victory to reach the Round of 16 of the Mozzart Bet Cup.
The upset unfolded on Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium. BB Bread, nicknamed the “Bakers”, cemented their reputation as the tournament’s ultimate “legend killers.”
The Nairobi Regional League side had already eliminated AFC Leopards earlier in the competition. Their latest victory over Gor Mahia has now sent shockwaves through the local football scene.
Late Strike Seals Historic Win
Gor Mahia dominated possession for long stretches of the match. However, the league leaders struggled to break down a disciplined BB Bread defense.
Former Leopards goalkeeper Ezekiel Owade marshalled the backline well. His organization frustrated Gor Mahia attackers throughout the match.
The decisive moment arrived in the 84th minute.
Substitute winger Dennis Muthini, who had only been on the pitch for about a minute, latched onto a low cross from Reagan Chavulimu. He controlled the ball calmly before slotting it past Gor Mahia goalkeeper Kevin Omondi.
The goal sparked wild celebrations from the underdogs and stunned the Nyayo crowd.
After the match, Muthini explained how the team approached the clash.
“We respect them a lot, but the first chance we got, we made it count,” he said.

A Giant-Killing Run
BB Bread FC’s journey in the 2026 Mozzart Bet Cup has become one of the tournament’s most remarkable stories.
Their campaign has already claimed two of Kenya’s most decorated clubs:
- Round of 64 (Feb 8, 2026): Beat AFC Leopards 4–3 on penalties after a 2–2 draw.
- Round of 32 (Mar 8, 2026): Defeated Gor Mahia 1–0 in regulation time.
Both clubs form part of the famous “Mashemeji Derby.” Their elimination by the same amateur side has shocked fans across the country.
Selection Gamble Backfires
Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor admitted the result was difficult to accept.
The tactician rotated heavily, making 10 changes to his starting lineup. Only defender Frank Odhiambo kept his place from the previous league match.
The decision left the team looking disjointed in attack. Gor Mahia created few clear chances despite dominating possession.
Akonnor later described the defeat as a “bitter pill to swallow.”
Dream Run Continues
With the victory, BB Bread FC advance to the Round of 16 of the Mozzart Bet Cup.
The Kayole-based club is now the lowest-ranked team remaining in the competition. They are also just four wins away from qualifying for the CAF Confederation Cup.
For a team competing in the fifth tier, the dream run has already captured the imagination of Kenyan football fans.
And if the “Bakers” continue their giant-killing spree, the 2026 Mozzart Bet Cup could become one of the most unforgettable cup stories in the country’s history.
