Kenya Voter Roll Hits 22.6 Million as Registration Surges

As of March 25, 2026, Kenya’s total registered voters reached 22,603,314. According to Dr. Alutalala Mukhwana, Commissioner of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in Kenya. He serves as the Chairperson of the Voter Education, Partnerships, Communication & Stakeholder Engagement Committee, the figure continues to rise steadily.
This total includes 22,352,923 voters at the start of 2026. Additionally, 250,391 new voters joined during the ongoing continuous registration drive.

Steady Growth in Voter Registration

The latest data shows consistent progress in voter enrollment. Notably, the current drive has added over 250,000 new voters. Therefore, the numbers reflect growing public participation in democratic processes.

Moreover, the gender balance among new voters remains nearly equal. Male voters account for 50.9 percent of new registrations. Meanwhile, female voters make up 49.1 percent.

Age Demographics Reveal Key Trends

Interestingly, most new voters are above 35 years. This group represents 67.35 percent, or about 168,638 individuals. In contrast, voters aged 35 years and below account for 32.65 percent.

However, youth participation remains significant. For instance, 67,888 voters fall within the 18 to 20 age bracket. Thus, young voters continue to play a crucial role in shaping future elections.IEBC

Urban Areas Lead Registration Numbers

Urban and peri-urban regions recorded the highest number of new registrations. For example, Nairobi leads with 49,055 new voters. Similarly, Kiambu County follows with 20,404 registrations.

Additionally, Mombasa recorded 15,140 new voters. Machakos County and Nakuru also reported strong turnout. Consequently, urban centers continue to drive voter registration growth.

IEBC Sets Ambitious Targets

Looking ahead, the IEBC plans to intensify registration efforts. The commission will launch the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) on March 30, 2026. Initially, it targets 2.5 million new voters within 30 days.

Furthermore, the long-term goal focuses on the 2027 General Election. The IEBC aims to register 6.3 million new voters. Ultimately, this would raise the total electorate to 28.5 million voters.

What This Means for Kenya

Overall, rising voter numbers signal increased civic engagement across the country. At the same time, strong participation supports inclusive and credible elections. Therefore, continued registration efforts will play a vital role in strengthening Kenya’s democracy.
