Linda Ground and Linda Mwananchi Factions Hold Rival Nairobi Meetings Amid Police Standoff

On March 27, 2026, the Orange Democratic Movement entered a critical internal crisis in Nairobi. Two rival factions held parallel national meetings, exposing deep divisions within the party.

Linda Ground Faction Holds Official Convention

The “Linda Ground” faction, led by Oburu Oginga and Gladys Wanga, organized a Special Delegates Convention.
The meeting took place at Jamhuri Grounds.

Moreover, the faction aimed to ratify decisions made by the National Executive Council. These decisions include confirming interim officials and shaping the 2027 election strategy. Additionally, the group supports cooperation with William Ruto under a broad-based government.

Linda Mwananchi Faction Pushes for Reforms

Meanwhile, the “Linda Mwananchi” faction opposed the official meeting and its outcomes. Key leaders include Edwin Sifuna, James Orengo, and Babu Owino.

Initially, they planned a parallel “People’s NDC” at Ufungamano House. However, police blocked access and dispersed delegates at the venue. Consequently, some supporters redirected to Jacaranda Grounds.

The faction demands competitive elections for all party positions. Furthermore, it opposes alleged external influence over party leadership.

Key Differences Between the Two Factions

Firstly, Linda Ground prioritizes structured leadership and negotiated political alliances. In contrast, Linda Mwananchi emphasizes grassroots empowerment and internal democracy.

Additionally, the official wing seeks to confirm interim leadership. However, the rival faction demands full elections across all party levels.

Rising Tensions and Political Implications

Currently, tensions remain high across Nairobi due to heavy police deployment. Authorities restricted gatherings linked to the rival faction’s meeting.

Therefore, the standoff signals a deepening leadership crisis within ODM. It also raises concerns about party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ultimately, the outcome of this internal conflict could reshape Kenya’s opposition politics.
