Gunfire Erupts in Ol Kalou as Gachagua Blames Murkomen
Severe political tensions flared in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County, on Wednesday evening, July 1, 2026, following reports of gunfire and clashes at the Royal Garden Hotel during a Democracy for the Citizens Party strategic campaign meeting. Specifically, the incident highlights a widening rift between President William Ruto’s administration and his former deputy turned rival, Rigathi Gachagua, ahead of a highly competitive parliamentary by-election scheduled for July 16, 2026.
Gachagua’s Explosive Accusations
The former Deputy President released an explosive statement directly accusing Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen. Specifically, Gachagua claimed Murkomen dispatched a special “Nairobi Sierra” police killer squad to disrupt DCP campaign operations.
Furthermore, he alleged that state-backed groups and police officers carried out forced abductions and indiscriminate beatings of DCP campaigners. Additionally, Gachagua stated that his strategic team was held hostage inside the Royal Garden Hotel as heavily armed militias attempted to breach the premises.

Murkomen Fires Back
The Interior CS strongly rejected every allegation. Specifically, Murkomen labelled Gachagua’s statements as juvenile attempts at reverse psychology aimed at masking his own plans to deploy goons. Furthermore, he issued a stern public warning, “Try violence in Ol Kalou and you will see.”
Additionally, government sources indicated that the security complications arose partly because DCP leaders failed to formally notify local law enforcement of their scheduled procession and itinerary.
Why Ol Kalou Matters
This by-election has become far more than a local contest. Specifically, the Ol Kalou mini-poll has evolved into an intense proxy battleground between UDA and Gachagua’s DCP.
Furthermore, UDA candidate Samuel Muchina faces DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Ngotho in what has become a litmus test for regional political dominance ahead of the 2027 General Election.
