TSC Warns Unregistered Teachers Risk Jail or Heavy Fines

Strict Warning Issued
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has warned Kenyans against teaching without registration. Moreover, offenders risk two years in jail or a fine of Ksh100,000.

Gazette Notice Released
TSC CEO Eveleen Mitei issued a gazette notice this week. Additionally, she emphasized that unregistered teaching contravenes the TSC Act.

Penalties for Schools
Mitei cautioned schools against hiring unregistered teachers. Consequently, institutions found guilty will face similar penalties under the law.

Legal Framework
The warning is anchored in the TSC Act and Regulation 18 of the Code of Regulations for Teachers. Furthermore, section 45 of the Act reinforces compliance requirements.

Recent Deregistration Cases
Three teachers were deregistered in November 2025 after disciplinary hearings. Therefore, their names were permanently removed from the TSC register.

No Reinstatement Allowed
The Commission stated deregistered teachers cannot be reinstated without its direction. Ultimately, removal from the register ends their teaching career under the Act.

Teacher Code of Conduct
Registered teachers must act responsibly and professionally at all times. Moreover, they are required to uphold integrity in their workplace duties.

Disciplinary Process Explained
When misconduct is reported, the Commission initiates investigations immediately. Consequently, teachers receive interdiction letters outlining allegations before disciplinary action is upheld.
