Nairobi Duo Arrested for Fake Police Recruitment Scam
Detectives have arrested two women accused of defrauding job seekers using fake National Police Service (NPS) recruitment letters in Nairobi’s CBD. The arrests happened on Tuesday, December 9, after several victims filed complaints from the busy Kencom area.
Suspects Promised Guaranteed NPS Jobs
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the women targeted desperate job seekers with promises of guaranteed police jobs. They demanded bribes in exchange for fake calling letters and convinced victims that the documents were genuine.
Sting Operation Leads to Arrest and Cash Recovery
Acting on intelligence reports, detectives launched a sting operation that led to the arrest of the two suspects. Moreover, officers recovered Ksh320,000, which they believe came from the fraudulent scheme. The money and forged documents strengthened the case.
Investigations Expose a Wider Fraud Network
After interrogating the women, detectives discovered that they were part of a wider network based in Upper Hill. During a follow-up operation, a third accomplice escaped when he learned police were after him. However, he abandoned his Mazda station wagon, and officers found two more fake NPS letters inside.
Search Continues for Escaped Accomplice
The two women remain in custody as they await arraignment. Meanwhile, detectives continue to search for the fleeing accomplice and analyze evidence from the abandoned vehicle to uncover the full fraud scheme.
More Job Scams Highlight Growing Trend
Notably, this incident occurred one day after another suspect was charged with defrauding Kenyans of Ksh2 million using a similar scam. Furthermore, a week earlier, investigators arrested another fraudster who conned job seekers out of Ksh2.5 million. These repeated cases reveal a growing trend of scams targeting job seekers across Kenya.
