Utumishi Girls Reopens for Grade 10 Students Today
Grade 10 learners have officially resumed classes at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, today, July 6, 2026. Specifically, this marks the second phase of a carefully structured reopening following the tragic dormitory fire on May 28 that claimed 16 lives and injured 79 others. Furthermore, the school is implementing strict safety and psychosocial support measures to ease the return of traumatised students.
The Full Phased Reopening Schedule
The school adopted a staggered return to manage the emotional and logistical complexities of reopening. Specifically, Form Four students were the first group to return on Thursday, July 2.
Furthermore, Grade 10 learners officially reported back today, July 6. Additionally, Form Three students are scheduled to complete the phased return on Thursday, July 9.

What Students Are Returning To
Conditions on the ground reflect the ongoing impact of the tragedy. Specifically, the dormitory directly affected by the fire remains cordoned off as an active crime scene.
Furthermore, temporary dormitories have been set up to house returning students. Additionally, strict security checks and screening are in place at the gate for all returning learners.
Psychosocial Support in Place
The school administration has prioritised mental health for returning students. Specifically, a structured post-traumatic counselling programme offers individualised psychosocial support to learners and their guardians.
Therefore, every student returning to Utumishi has access to professional support as they settle back into learning.
