Lilian Odira Defeats Hodgkinson With Season’s Best Run

On Sunday, July 5, 2026, Kenya’s reigning world champion Lilian Odira claimed victory in the women’s 800m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon. Odira clocked a season’s best 1:56.19 to secure her first victory at Hayward Field. The race also marked her career debut on American soil.

Odira Produces Brilliant Late Surge

The Kenyan star stayed patient throughout the race. However, she unleashed a powerful finishing kick over the final 100 metres.

Her impressive burst carried her past Great Britain’s Olympic champion, Keely Hodgkinson, in the closing stages. The victory denied Hodgkinson’s bid to challenge the world record.

Strong Podium Finish

Hodgkinson settled for second place in 1:56.73. Meanwhile, American runner Addison Wiley finished third with a season’s best 1:57.70.

Sanu Jallow Lockhart placed fourth after crossing the line in 1:58.12. The race attracted one of the strongest women’s 800m fields of the season.

Fast Pace Delivers Quality Times

Pacemaker Paris Peoples set a blistering early pace. She covered the opening 400 metres in 53.58 seconds, well ahead of the planned split.

The fast opening lap produced one of the quickest races of the Diamond League season. Odira’s winning time also became the fastest women’s 800m performance recorded on American soil this year.

Diamond League Payday

The women’s 800m featured as a premier Diamond+ Discipline event. As a result, Odira received the winner’s prize of $20,000, approximately KSh2.6 million.

Hodgkinson earned $6,000, while Wiley collected $4,000 for third place.

Kenya Enjoys Memorable Night

Odira’s victory capped another successful outing for Kenya at the Prefontaine Classic. Her triumph came alongside Faith Cherotich’s victory in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase.

Together, the two champions delivered a memorable night for Kenyan athletics and strengthened the country’s dominance on the Diamond League circuit.
