Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has asked retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to step back from active politics and invited Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to consider joining the People’s Renaissance Movement (PM) Party ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Addressing women’s groups in Kisii on September 25, the PM Party leader urged Sifuna to review his political alliances and work with leaders whose objectives align with his own. He also announced his decision to work with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
Amisi challenges Uhuru’s political role
Amisi urged Uhuru to avoid public political interventions, saying the former president should instead offer financial backing to the opposition grouping known as the WANTAM brigade.
He accused Uhuru of seeking to shape opposition politics while publicly appearing to support its leaders. Amisi argued that opposition politicians should be free to organise themselves without interference from the retired president.
The MP further alleged that Uhuru’s public support for the opposition was inconsistent with his political intentions. Those accusations were presented as Amisi’s claims, rather than established actions by the former president.
Sifuna invited to reconsider alliances
In his appeal to Sifuna, Amisi specifically called on the Nairobi senator to distance himself from Siaya Governor James Orengo and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.
He argued that assembling leaders with shared political goals would strengthen what he described as Sifuna’s presidential ambitions. The invitation placed PM Party among the political vehicles being discussed as opposition figures weigh their options before the next election.
Amisi has previously indicated that Sifuna would be invited to take part in the party’s presidential vetting process. His latest remarks renewed that outreach, but did not amount to an announcement that the senator had joined the party.
Sifuna is separately associated with the Linda Mwananchi political movement, which has been exploring options for a political party ahead of the 2027 polls.
Matiang’i partnership and 2027 plans
Amisi said his decision to work with Matiang’i reflected his assessment of the former Interior Cabinet Secretary’s leadership experience and development record. He pledged support for Matiang’i as part of efforts to build their political future.
The remarks come amid continuing negotiations among opposition leaders over alliances and the parties they could use in the 2027 contest.
Launched by Amisi in August, PM Party has set out economic liberation, justice and national renewal as its priorities. The Saboti MP has previously said it plans to field a presidential candidate in 2027.
He has also advocated a competitive nomination process to select an opposition presidential candidate, rather than leaving the choice to a private agreement among political leaders.
