Her music blends smooth reggae melodies with the energy of dancehall. That combination has helped her build an audience beyond Jamaica, including strong followings in Europe and Japan.

Meanwhile, the planned performance adds to Kenya’s recent connections with visiting reggae and dancehall musicians. Luciano, Charly Black, Don Carlos and Glen Washington have all visited the country in recent years.

For Ce’Cile, the December engagement offers another opportunity to connect with the Kenyan audience familiar with her catalogue. Her collaborations with local artists also form part of that relationship.

From studio work to a dancehall breakthrough

Born in Manchester Parish, Jamaica, Ce’Cile began developing her music career in the mid-1990s. Before establishing herself as a solo performer, she worked as a studio manager, backing vocalist, songwriter and producer.

Her breakthrough came in 2001 through Can You Do the Work, a collaboration with Sean Paul. The track appeared on his Grammy-winning album Dutty Rock, which sold more than two million copies in the United States.

Since then, her releases have included Bad Gyal, Waiting, Jamaicanization, Still Running and Music + Magic. Her bold, confident style has also shaped her reputation as the Bad Gyal.

Alongside that image, Ce’Cile’s songs explore relationships, women’s experiences and life in Jamaica. Those themes have helped establish her among the leading female voices in modern dancehall.
