Rescue teams have recovered six bodies following the Eastleigh building collapse, Nairobi County officials have confirmed. The multi-agency search along 9th Street has now entered its 14th day.
Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Osumba announced the latest figures during a briefing on the recovery operation. The multi-storey building collapsed on October 23.
National Disaster Management Unit Director Duncan Ochieng said the deceased comprised four women and two men. Teams have also rescued four people alive.
Eastleigh building collapse recovery continues
The latest total follows the discovery of three more bodies in the rubble. Teams spotted two on Wednesday night and another early Thursday, adding to three recovered in preceding days.
Meanwhile, rescuers continue to face difficulties reaching the building’s remaining sections, particularly the basement. Teams believe some missing people may be trapped there, complicating efforts to reach them.
The operation brings together the Kenya Defence Forces, National Disaster Management Unit and National Disaster Operations Centre. Nairobi County Government and the Kenya Red Cross are also taking part.
As work continues, Osumba appealed for patience from relatives who have been camping at the site. He also expressed condolences to families who have lost loved ones.
Families await identification procedures
Osumba said authorities had previously listed 11 people as missing, with five still unaccounted for. However, officials have yet to establish whether those five were in the affected section.
Authorities have asked families of missing people to visit the mortuary to assist with identification procedures. These include post-mortem examinations and DNA profiling.
Five of the recovered bodies are currently at Nairobi City Mortuary for identification and other formal procedures. Authorities have also notified two families, although DNA confirmation and other steps remain pending.
Meanwhile, emergency personnel continue searching the rubble as relatives wait for updates on those still missing. Osumba urged those gathered at the site to remain patient while teams work to complete the recovery operation.
