Ethiopian-born lawyer Melat Kiros has made history after winning a seat in the US House of Representatives during the November 3, 2026, midterm elections. The 29-year-old Democratic socialist won Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, according to an Associated Press race call.

Her victory makes her the first Generation Z woman elected to Congress. She will represent a district covering most of Denver, Colorado, after defeating Republican Christy Petersen and Independent Shimon Blau.

Kiros’ win follows another political breakthrough earlier this year. She defeated longtime Democratic incumbent Diana DeGette in the party’s June primary, ending DeGette’s bid for another term after nearly three decades in Congress.

Ethiopian-Born Kiros Makes Political History

Kiros was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and immigrated to the United States with her family as an infant through the diversity visa lottery, according to reports.

She grew up in the Denver-Aurora area and later studied law at the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 2022. She has also pursued doctoral studies in public policy.

Before entering politics, Kiros worked in the legal profession and held other jobs, including working as a barista. Her background and campaign message helped position her as a challenger to the established Democratic leadership in Colorado.

Kiros Defeats Longtime Incumbent Diana DeGette

Kiros gained national attention in June after defeating DeGette in the Democratic primary. DeGette had represented Colorado’s 1st Congressional District since 1997, the same year Kiros was born. The contest reflected calls for generational change within the Democratic Party.

Kiros campaigned on expanding healthcare access, providing universal childcare and addressing housing affordability. She also opposed corporate influence in politics and called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Her positions on Israel and US military aid to the country also became major points of debate during the campaign.

Democratic Socialists Expand Their Presence

Kiros received support from the Democratic Socialists of America and progressive political figures, including Senator Bernie Sanders.

Her election forms part of a broader movement of younger, left-leaning candidates seeking seats in Congress. Reports indicated that at least five successful House candidates in the midterms had received endorsements from the organisation or its local chapters.

The victories could increase the movement’s influence over debates on healthcare, childcare, workers’ rights and US foreign policy.

However, turning campaign promises into legislation will depend on negotiations, congressional support and the political process.

Kiros Joins a New Generation in Congress

Kiros will join a small group of Generation Z lawmakers when the new Congress convenes in January 2027. Florida Democrat Maxwell Frost became the first Gen Z member of Congress after winning his House seat in 2022. Kiros’ victory adds a historic milestone for women and younger political leaders.

Her election also highlights changing demands within the Democratic Party, where some voters have backed younger candidates promising a different approach to politics.

As Kiros prepares to take office, attention will turn to how she advances her priorities and represents her Denver-area constituents.
