Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms has made history after winning Georgia’s gubernatorial election on November 3, 2026. The former Atlanta mayor defeated Republican billionaire Rick Jackson, becoming the first Black woman elected governor in United States history.

The Associated Press called the race for Bottoms, marking a major political milestone for Georgia and the country. Her victory also makes her Georgia’s first female governor and first Black governor.

Bottoms won despite Jackson reportedly spending more than $200 million of his personal fortune on the campaign. Her victory also returns Georgia’s governor’s office to Democratic control for the first time since 1998.

Bottoms Defeats Billionaire Rick Jackson

Preliminary results reported by the Associated Press showed Bottoms leading with approximately 54.3 per cent of the vote. Jackson received about 45.7 per cent, with nearly all expected votes counted at the time of the race call.

Jackson, the founder of healthcare staffing company Jackson Healthcare, ran as a Republican challenger to the former Atlanta mayor. His campaign focused on issues including tax cuts, public safety and deregulation.

However, Bottoms overcame the significant spending gap to secure the governorship. Her win shifts control of the governor’s office from Republicans to Democrats.

A Historic Milestone for Black Women

Bottoms’ election marks a breakthrough in American political representation. She becomes the first Black woman elected governor of a US state.

The victory follows years of efforts by Black women to gain greater representation in senior elected offices. Georgia has also emerged as a closely contested political battleground in recent national elections.

Bottoms previously served as Atlanta’s mayor and later worked as a senior adviser in President Joe Biden’s administration. Her experience in local government and national politics shaped her return to electoral office.

Bottoms Promises to Govern for All Georgians

During her victory speech, Bottoms emphasised the need to represent voters across the state, regardless of their political choices.

She said the campaign had focused on communities throughout Georgia and pledged to govern for all residents. Her administration will now face the task of turning campaign commitments into policy. Reports indicate her priorities include expanding Medicaid, raising the minimum wage and repealing Georgia’s six-week abortion ban.

However, Bottoms may face legislative challenges if Republicans retain control of at least one chamber of the state legislature. That could affect how quickly she advances her agenda.

Georgia Enters a New Political Chapter

Bottoms’ victory marks a significant shift in Georgia politics after more than two decades of Republican control of the governor’s office.

Her election also adds a historic milestone to the 2026 midterm elections, which have produced major changes across the American political landscape.

As she prepares to succeed term-limited Governor Brian Kemp, attention will turn to her transition plans and the policies she pursues in office.
