Why Tanzania Remembers “The Bulldozer” John Magufuli Five Years Later
On March 17, 2026, Tanzania commemorates five years since the death of John Pombe Magufuli. He served as the country’s fifth president from 2015 to 2021.
Magufuli earned the nickname “The Bulldozer” due to his aggressive leadership style. Therefore, many remember him for bold reforms and strict anti-corruption measures.
National Commemoration Events in Chato
The main ceremony will take place in Chato, his hometown. Emmanuel Nchimbi will lead the national event.
Additionally, a Holy Mass will form part of the commemoration program. Severine Niwemugizi will preside over the service.
The Magufuli family has organized the event alongside the government. Thus, the ceremony reflects both national and personal remembrance.
Key Achievements During His Presidency
Magufuli championed a “Tanzania First” development agenda. Consequently, his administration prioritized infrastructure and economic reforms.

He launched major projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway. Additionally, he expanded the Port of Dar es Salaam to boost trade.
Furthermore, he initiated the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Station project. These projects aimed to strengthen Tanzania’s energy and transport sectors.
- Economic and Social Reforms
Under his leadership, Tanzania reached lower-middle-income status. Moreover, he reduced government spending and limited unnecessary foreign travel.
In 2016, he introduced free basic education in public schools. As a result, school enrollment increased significantly nationwide.
- Revival of National Carrier
He also revived Air Tanzania by acquiring new aircraft. Therefore, the airline regained regional and international presence.

Death and Leadership Transition
Magufuli died in March 2021 after weeks out of public view. Officials attributed his death to heart complications.
Following his passing, Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed office. Consequently, she became Tanzania’s first female president on March 19, 2021.
