Eswatini’s HIV Injection Rollout Gains Focus on World AIDS Day 2025

As the world marks World AIDS Day 2025, Eswatini’s new HIV prevention milestone is back in focus. The country introduced a twice-yearly HIV prevention injection on 18 November, 2025, making it the first in Africa to do so. The move ties directly to this year’s theme: “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response.”

Health officials rolled out lenacapavir, a drug that showed near-complete protection in trials. They began with high-risk groups. They plan to widen access as supplies increase.

A recent price cut helped lower-income nations consider the drug. Even so, debates continue over manufacturing rights and long-term availability. Many experts say Africa must secure wider production to avoid future supply gaps.

Still, Eswatini’s early step signals progress. It shows how African countries can adopt new tools and strengthen HIV prevention after years of health disruptions.
