Isiolo Horror: Bandits Gun Down Three NPR Officers in Night Attack
Armed bandits shot and killed three officers from the National Police Reserve on Saturday night after staging a deadly ambush in Madhi Qarsa Village in Chari Ward, located in Merti Sub-County. The attack has heightened tension in the region, which has experienced repeated security threats.
Bandits Launch Sudden Night Attack
According to Merti Deputy County Commissioner Michael Kioni, the officers were guarding livestock when the attackers suspected to come from Samburu County launched a surprise assault. Earlier that evening, they had already moved the animals to safety, hoping to prevent a raid. Despite this effort, the attackers struck with precision and overwhelming force.
Attackers Trail Officers Before Killing Them
Kioni explained that security teams had advised the them to retreat for their safety. However, the attackers followed them through the rugged terrain. The officers paused briefly to prepare tea, unaware that the bandits were closing in. The ambush happened within minutes, leaving all three officers dead on the spot. The brutality of the attack shocked residents, who rely heavily on NPR teams for protection against armed groups.
Government Boosts Security After Attack
Following the killings, Kioni reassured the community that the government is intensifying efforts to stabilise the area. Security agencies have increased patrols and launched pursuit operations targeting the group responsible for the attack. Officers are also enhancing surveillance in vulnerable border zones to prevent further raids and protect herders.
He added that the government remains committed to restoring peace and supporting families affected by the attack. The killings highlight the ongoing challenges officers face in regions where banditry continues to threaten lives, livelihoods, and local stability.
