Moses Matovu was a founding figure of Afrigo Band and a longtime presence in Uganda’s live-band music scene.
Police are investigating a reported attack in Kampala that claimed the life of veteran Ugandan musician Moses Matovu.
Matovu, a founding member and longtime leader of Afrigo Band, died at the age of 77 after the alleged attack.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said attackers reportedly assaulted Matovu on Thursday morning, September 24, 2026, in Kibuli Market Zone B, Makindye Division.
Responders rushed him to Kibuli Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
His death brings to a close a music career that spanned more than six decades. During that time, he played a key role in shaping one of Uganda’s most influential bands.
Police investigate reported attack
Kawala said officers received the report at Kabagala Police Station and immediately launched investigations.
Police deployed a task team to the scene to gather evidence and establish what happened.
Investigators are also working to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
Authorities have not yet established the motive behind the incident. Police only described the suspects as unknown assailants.
A founding figure of Afrigo Band
Fans widely knew Matovu as Papa Moi.
He helped establish Afrigo Band in 1975 after the collapse of Cranes Band. He later became one of the group’s most recognizable figures.
Matovu built his reputation as a vocalist, saxophonist and composer. He also guided the band’s musical direction for decades.
His leadership helped Afrigo remain relevant in Uganda’s evolving music industry. He also mentored several generations of musicians.
Afrigo blended Ugandan rhythms with jazz, Congolese rumba and other African influences to create its signature sound.
Matovu shaped not only the band’s music but also its identity and legacy.
His long service made him one of the most respected figures in Uganda’s live-band scene.
Over the years, Afrigo grew into one of the country’s most enduring and celebrated musical institutions.
From cathedral choir to band leadership
Matovu was born on June 19, 1949, in Kawempe, Kampala.
He developed an interest in music at a young age and sang in the Namirembe Cathedral choir before launching his professional career in the 1960s.
He later performed with Thunderbirds Band, Uganda Police Band and Cranes Band.
Those experiences prepared him for the formation of Afrigo Band in 1975 alongside fellow musicians.
Throughout his career, Matovu balanced singing, songwriting, instrumental performance and band leadership.
His work left a lasting mark on Ugandan music and strengthened the legacy of Afrigo Band.
Police continue to investigate the reported attack as detectives work to establish the full circumstances surrounding his death.
