Activist Boniface Muteti Mulinge has been found alive with injuries in Lukenya, Machakos County, days after he reportedly disappeared following an alleged arrest in Nairobi.
Human rights official Hussein Khaled said Mulinge was found early Friday after allegedly being left in the area at about 3am.
Khaled said Mulinge appeared weak, disoriented and injured when people found him.
He was later taken to hospital for treatment.
However, questions remain about how he reached Lukenya and what happened before his discovery.
Mulinge Gets Help at Petrol Station
Khaled said Mulinge walked for a long distance after he was allegedly abandoned in Lukenya.
He eventually reached a Shell petrol station, where a Good Samaritan helped him use a phone.
Mulinge then contacted his brother, according to Khaled.
He had reportedly been missing since September 21, when he was allegedly arrested during demonstrations in Nairobi.
The protests involved calls for the release of Ugandan opposition figures, including opposition leader Kizza Besigye.
Court Case Sought Answers
Mulinge’s disappearance prompted a court application seeking information about his whereabouts.
Francis Awino filed the application at the Milimani Law Courts under constitutional protections covering personal liberty and habeas corpus.
Awino said Mulinge had informed people close to him that police had arrested him.
Communication later stopped, while his phone became unreachable.
The application named Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and DCI Director Mohammed Amin as respondents.
It sought arrest and detention records, including Occurrence Book entries, station diaries and custody records.
Questions Remain After Discovery
The petition also stated that police received notification about the planned demonstrations on September 16.
Awino further referred to a September 22 charge sheet involving other activists arrested after incidents along Mama Ngina Street.
Mulinge’s name reportedly did not appear among those charged.
A missing-person report was also filed on September 23 under OB No. 46, according to the petition.
His discovery confirms that he is alive, but it does not explain his alleged arrest, movement to Lukenya or the injuries he sustained.
Police had not immediately issued a public explanation addressing the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and subsequent discovery.
