Governor Susan Kihika outlines pedestrian facilities, drainage, streetlights and tree planting as Nakuru prepares to host celebrations at Afraha Stadium.

Nakuru County has begun preparations to host the 2027 Madaraka Day celebrations at Afraha Stadium on June 1. Governor Susan Kihika has outlined four infrastructure priorities ahead of the national event.

Kihika announced the preparations on Tuesday, November 3, after meeting regional engineers from the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA). The meeting assessed ongoing road expansion projects across Nakuru city.

The planned upgrades include pedestrian facilities, modern drainage channels, streetlights and tree planting. Meanwhile, a technical committee will oversee the projects in the coming months. Its members include county officials, KURA representatives and officials from the County Commissioner’s office.

Kihika said the county had agreed to incorporate non-motorised transport facilities to improve pedestrian safety. The plans also include modern drainage channels alongside the city’s road infrastructure work.

In addition, the county plans to install streetlights to strengthen public security. Tree planting will cover Oginga Odinga Avenue and four spur roads as part of environmental conservation efforts.

The planting plans follow claims of tree felling in the city. The technical committee will also oversee conservation work alongside the other infrastructure projects.

Nakuru’s hosting role follows the government’s 2015 policy of rotating national holiday celebrations among counties. Homa Bay hosted Madaraka Day in 2025, while Wajir hosted the celebrations in 2026.

The annual national holidays include Madaraka Day on June 1 and Mashujaa Day on October 20. Jamhuri Day falls on December 12.
