Government Plans KDF Training Grounds in Kerio Valley
Security Measures Announced
Amid escalating tensions in Kerio Valley, the government announced new security measures. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen revealed plans to establish training grounds starting January 2026.
Presidential Approval
Murkomen confirmed President William Ruto approved the training facilities. Moreover, the grounds will serve both Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and National Police Service (NPS).
Permanent Installations Planned
The CS emphasized permanent security installations will be established. Consequently, operational bases will strengthen peace efforts in the troubled region.
Training Grounds in Kerio Valley
Murkomen explained the new training grounds will mirror Kiganjo facilities. Therefore, security teams will train locally to enhance regional stability.
Addressing Banditry Challenges
The government aims to find lasting solutions to banditry. Unlike temporary measures, permanent institutions will deter recurring insecurity.
Community Cooperation Encouraged
Murkomen praised residents for cooperating with security agencies. Additionally, he noted Christmas festivities were peaceful compared to previous years.
Trans Mara Declared Disturbed
Days earlier, Murkomen declared 14 parts of Trans Mara disturbed. Violent clashes left several dead and hundreds displaced in Narok County.
Gazette Notice Issued
A Gazette Notice listed Kilgoris, Ang’ata Barrikoi, Lolgorian, Mogondo, Keyian, Kirindon, Olderkesi, Nkararo, and Kapsasian as insecure. Other areas including Kakemer, Ntimaru, and Maji Moto were also flagged.
Disarmament Efforts Ongoing
The government recovered 1,000 illegal firearms during recent disarmament. Therefore, banditry activities significantly reduced though threats still linger.
Curfew Imposed
Deputy Inspector General’s Eliud Lagat and Gilbert Masengeli announced a 30-day curfew. The dusk-to-dawn restriction covers Trans Mara East and South.
The government’s directive combines military training, community cooperation, and disarmament. Ultimately, these measures aim to restore peace and stability in Kerio Valley and beyond.
