Government Releases Ksh 44 Billion for Grade 10 Transition
Funds Disbursed Ahead of January Intake
The government has released Ksh 44 billion in capitation funds to public schools. Moreover, President William Ruto confirmed the funds will reach schools before learner’s report in January 2026.
Assurance to Parents and Learners
Ruto assured that no student will miss the Grade 10 transition. Consequently, he emphasized that over 1.1 million learners will join senior schools without disruption.
Warning Against Politicization
The President cautioned politicians against politicizing the transition process. He reiterated that every learner who sat the KJSEA exams will be accommodated.
Infrastructure Prepared for Transition
Ruto highlighted that classrooms and laboratories have been constructed to support the transition. Additionally, he announced that 1,600 laboratories and 23,000 classrooms are ready for use.
Teacher Recruitment Drive
By January 2026, the government will have hired more than 100,000 teachers. Therefore, schools will have adequate staff to manage the increased student population.
Addressing Education Sector Challenges
Ruto reaffirmed government commitment to smooth transitions despite past funding crises. He noted that adequate arrangements have been made to ensure stability in schools.
Ministry Rejects Transfer Requests
The Ministry of Education recently rejected over 60,000 transfer applications. Students cited long distances to assigned schools, prompting discontent among parents and learners.
Second Review Window Announced
Principal Secretary Julius Bitok explained most requests were declined due to capacity issues. Nevertheless, he assured students of a second review window between January 6 and January 9.
The government’s release of funds, infrastructure expansion, and teacher recruitment demonstrate readiness. Ultimately, these measures aim to guarantee a smooth Grade 10 transition for all learners.
