Nairobi Flash Floods Kill 42 as Heavy Rains Devastate City
At least 42 people have died after severe flash floods struck Nairobi following heavy overnight rains. The rainfall began on March 6, 2026, and quickly caused widespread flooding across several neighborhoods.
As rescue teams continue search operations, authorities warn the death toll could increase.
Death Toll Rises as Search Operations Continue
According to George Seda, the Nairobi police chief, the confirmed death toll reached 42. Rescue teams recovered five additional bodies on Saturday evening.
Emergency responders continue searching flooded areas for missing residents. Consequently, officials expect more updates as operations progress.
Meanwhile, government agencies and volunteers are assisting families affected by the disaster.
Grogan and Informal Settlements Among Hardest Hit
Floodwaters severely affected multiple neighborhoods across the city. However, the Grogan area in the central business district recorded some of the worst damage.
Rescuers retrieved several bodies from flooded garages after the Nairobi River burst its banks. Additionally, other heavily affected areas include Mathare, Mukuru, Kibra, and South B.
These neighborhoods often experience flooding due to poor drainage and dense housing.

Causes of Death During the Flood Disaster
Authorities confirmed several causes behind the fatalities. Most victims drowned after powerful floodwaters swept them away. However, other tragic incidents also occurred during the heavy rainfall.
For example, a house collapsed in Mathare after a large boulder crashed into the structure. In addition, some residents suffered electrocution from exposed electrical lines in flooded streets.
Therefore, emergency teams continue urging residents to avoid flooded areas.
Thousands Displaced Across Nairobi
Besides the fatalities, the floods displaced thousands of residents across the city. Officials estimate that more than 147,000 people have lost their homes temporarily.
Many families now seek shelter in safer areas or emergency camps. Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations are providing food, blankets, and medical assistance.
Weather Warning as Rains Continue
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued further weather warnings. Forecasts predict continued rainfall between 30mm and 70mm until March 10, 2026.
As a result, authorities warn residents to remain cautious near rivers and flood-prone areas. Emergency services also continue monitoring weather patterns closely.
Ultimately, the Nairobi floods highlight the urgent need for improved drainage systems and disaster preparedness.
