Nairobi–Nyahururu Railway Reopens After 46 Years

On June 2, 2026, Kenya marked a major transport milestone with the official return of the Nairobi–Gilgil–Ol Kalou–Nyahururu railway line. Consequently, passenger services resumed after a 46-year suspension.

The revived route, branded as the Hustler Express and Nyahururu Safari Train, completed its maiden journey amid excitement from residents and travelers.

Additionally, the line revives a historic transport corridor previously known as the Thompson Railway. The project forms part of broader efforts to modernize and expand Kenya’s railway network.

Kenya Railways Completes Major Rehabilitation

Kenya Railways undertook extensive rehabilitation works before reopening the line. Consequently, passengers can now travel between Nairobi and Nyahururu through several key towns.

The restoration involved upgrading tracks, stations, and operational systems. Additionally, authorities expect the railway to improve connectivity across Nyandarua and Laikipia counties.

The launch signals renewed investment in regional transport infrastructure.

Affordable Travel Options for Passengers

The new service offers affordable travel options for commuters and tourists. Economy-class tickets from Nairobi to Nyahururu cost KSh 600.

Additionally, VIP and first-class tickets range up to KSh 1,300 depending on the travel segment. Consequently, travelers can choose services that match their budgets and preferences.

Officials believe the pricing structure will encourage more people to use rail transport.Train

Freight Operations Already Deliver Results

Freight services commenced before the official passenger launch. Consequently, the railway transported 396 tonnes of government-subsidized fertilizer to National Cereals and Produce Board depots.

The deliveries reached key agricultural centers in Ol Kalou and Nyahururu. Additionally, the freight service is expected to lower transportation costs significantly.

Farmers and businesses stand to benefit from faster and more efficient cargo movement.

Economic Boost for Agricultural Regions

The railway is expected to stimulate economic growth across central Kenya. Additionally, it will support agricultural hubs known for potatoes, milk, and horticultural produce.

Lower transport costs could improve market access for farmers. Consequently, producers may enjoy higher returns and reduced logistical challenges.

The railway also strengthens supply chains connecting rural communities to urban markets.

Tourism Sector Set to Benefit

Beyond agriculture, the revived railway is expected to boost tourism. Additionally, visitors can now access attractions such as Thomson’s Falls more conveniently.

Officials believe the route will attract domestic and international tourists. Consequently, local businesses, hotels, and tour operators could experience increased demand.

The return of the historic railway marks a new chapter for transport, tourism, and economic development in Kenya.
