Ruto Clarifies Kenya’s 23 Ebola Response Facilities Amid Laikipia Debate
President William Ruto has clarified that Kenya’s 23 disease response facilities are spread across the country. Consequently, he dismissed claims suggesting all 23 facilities are located in Laikipia County.
Speaking during a media roundtable, Ruto explained that the proposed Ebola isolation center in Nanyuki forms part of a wider national preparedness strategy.
Additionally, he emphasized that Kenya has established disease surveillance systems in multiple counties. The government says the facilities strengthen the country’s ability to respond to health emergencies.
Laikipia Facility Part of Broader Health Framework
Ruto confirmed that he approved the establishment of a 50-bed Ebola isolation facility at the Nanyuki Air Base. Additionally, he stated that the project forms part of ongoing health cooperation between Kenya and the United States.
According to the President, the facility is not unique. Consequently, it joins several other emergency response centers already operating nationwide.
The government maintains that the initiative focuses on preparedness rather than responding to local infections.
Existing Facilities Already Operational
Ruto noted that similar response infrastructure exists in major hospitals across Kenya. Additionally, facilities have been established at key referral and security hospitals.
These include Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. Other facilities also operate within strategic public health institutions.
Consequently, authorities say Kenya already possesses a nationwide disease response network.

Purpose of the Isolation and Screening Centers
The facilities serve several critical public health functions. Additionally, they help authorities screen incoming travelers from affected regions.
Health teams can also isolate suspected cases and provide specialized treatment. Consequently, officials hope to prevent local transmission of dangerous infectious diseases.
The measures come as neighboring countries continue battling Ebola outbreaks.
Public Opposition Sparks Debate
Despite government assurances, the Laikipia project has generated significant public concern. Additionally, hundreds of Nanyuki residents have staged protests against the proposed facility.
Many residents fear possible exposure to highly infectious diseases. Consequently, the project has become the subject of intense public debate. The controversy has also attracted legal challenges.
Court Suspends Implementation
The High Court recently issued temporary orders suspending implementation of the facility. Additionally, the court directed relevant parties to address concerns raised in the case.
However, Ruto insists the project supports national health security. Consequently, he dismissed fears surrounding the facility as unnecessary politicization of public health matters.
The President also reassured Kenyans that the country remains Ebola-free while authorities continue strengthening preparedness measures nationwide.
