Ruto Agrees to Rename Talanta Stadium After Raila Odinga

President William Ruto has agreed to rename the upcoming Talanta Stadium to Raila Odinga International Stadium in honour of the late former Prime Minister.

The idea gained momentum during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium. Leaders and residents raised the request directly before the President.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja led the push. He told the Head of State that Nairobi residents want the stadium to carry Raila’s name. The crowd cheered loudly in support.

President Ruto responded on the spot. He highlighted ongoing upgrades in major stadiums and confirmed that the government will rename Talanta Stadium after Raila once construction ends.

“You know the good work going on at Talanta Stadium,” he said. “You people want it renamed to which name?”
The crowd shouted: “Raila Odinga!”

“You have said we should rename it to Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium. I have heard you. Once we finish the work, we will do that,” he added.

How the Renaming Will Work

The process starts with a formal proposal, like the one Governor Sakaja made during the celebrations.
Government ministries, Sports, Lands, and Public Works, will study the request and prepare a recommendation for the Cabinet and the President.

After the President approves the change, officials will hold public consultations to collect views and settle concerns.
Legal teams will check the proposal to ensure it fits laws on public assets, national heritage and existing contracts.

Once everything clears, the government will issue a gazette notice to make the name official.
Teams will then update signage, maps, branding, tickets and digital platforms.
The government may also organise a public ceremony to unveil the new Raila Odinga International Stadium.
