Utumishi Girls Fire Victims Receive Final Send-Off in Gilgil

Kenya paused today to mourn 15 schoolgirls whose lives ended too soon. Specifically, a solemn Requiem Mass took place at Gilgil Stadium in Nakuru County on June 12, 2026. Furthermore, grieving families, students, and senior government officials gathered to pay their final respects to the victims of the Utumishi Girls Academy dormitory fire.

White Coffins Arrive at Gilgil Stadium

Fifteen white coffins carrying the remains left Naivasha Hospital mortuary on Friday morning. Subsequently, hearses transported the bodies to the stadium in a deeply moving procession.

Consequently, the sight of the coffins lined up side by side reduced many in attendance to tears. Meanwhile, one student had already been laid to rest the previous week in Kwale County in accordance with Muslim burial traditions.

Dignitaries Join Grieving Families

Top government leaders attended the national memorial service. Specifically, First Lady Rachel Ruto, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna were all present.

Furthermore, religious leaders and community representatives joined families in mourning. Additionally, speakers at the service called urgently for stronger safety standards across Kenya’s boarding schools.

What Happened on the Night of May 28

The fire broke out around midnight on May 28, 2026, trapping students inside their dormitory. Critically, investigators allege that the dormitory was locked from the outside at the time of the fire.

Consequently, 16 girls perished in the inferno while 74 others sustained injuries and required hospitalisation.

DCI Investigates Suspected Arson

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations is handling the case as suspected arson. Therefore, DCI officers reviewed CCTV footage and recorded eyewitness statements.

Subsequently, investigators detained several students from the institution in connection with the fire. However, the investigation remains ongoing and no formal charges have been publicly announced.

A Nation Demands Accountability

Today’s service closed a painful chapter, but opened a louder conversation. Specifically, Kenyan parents, educators and leaders are demanding immediate fire safety audits across all boarding schools.

Furthermore, the tragedy has exposed dangerous gaps in how institutions protect students entrusted to their care.
