Fred Matiang’i Demands Inclusive Process for 2027 Opposition Flagbearer

Fred Matiang’i has called for a transparent and inclusive method to pick the opposition’s 2027 presidential candidate. The Jubilee Party deputy leader spoke in Nairobi on February 18.

He made the remarks after receiving endorsement from Party of National Unity (PNU). Consequently, his bid for the presidency gained fresh momentum.

Matiang’i emphasized that alliance building requires fairness and credibility. Therefore, he urged coalition partners to involve all stakeholders.

He argued that four candidates may lose during internal selection. However, they must trust the process and defend the final decision. Additionally, he demanded public participation in unity talks. According to him, transparency strengthens legitimacy.

He maintained that unity cannot exist without openness. Thus, he rejected any backroom arrangement.

Opposition Faces Internal Competition

His statement comes amid rising competition within the opposition coalition. Several principals continue lobbying for endorsement.

Despite rivalry, the coalition insists it will front one candidate. Leaders warn that division would benefit President William Ruto. Initially, the opposition planned to unveil its flagbearer in April 2026. However, some leaders now prefer early 2027.Gachagua

Meanwhile, coalition figures tour the country to build support. This strategy, however, has raised questions about unity.

Key Contenders and Coalition Leaders

So far, Matiang’i and Kalonzo Musyoka remain top contenders. One of them will likely secure the coalition ticket.

The alliance also includes prominent leaders. Among them are Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and Justin Muturi. Despite internal realignments, leaders insist they remain united. Matiang’i previously dismissed claims of division.

2027 Election Outlook

As the 2027 General Election approaches, pressure mounts on the coalition. Voters now await clarity on the opposition’s direction.

Ultimately, Matiang’i argues that inclusion guarantees stability. He believes a credible process will strengthen their challenge to Ruto.

The coming months will test the coalition’s unity and strategy.
