ODM MPs Removed from Key National Assembly Committees Amid 2027 Realignments
Wrangles within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have escalated ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Consequently, several ODM Members of Parliament have lost influential committee positions in the National Assembly.
The changes, effected on Tuesday, February 24, targeted lawmakers perceived as rebels.
Notably, the affected MPs have opposed the broad-based government arrangement supporting William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid.
Caroli Omondi Removed from CIOC Chairmanship
Suba South MP Caroli Omondi lost his seat in the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee (CIOC). Previously, he chaired the powerful oversight committee. However, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba replaced him.
Omondi strongly protested his removal. He alleged political interference influenced the decision. Furthermore, he claimed powerful forces intend to manipulate upcoming elections.
“They do not want me to chair CIOC because I will oversee elections,” Omondi stated.
He added that certain leaders fear strict oversight under his leadership.
Junet Mohamed Warns Rebel MPs
Meanwhile, Minority Leader Junet Mohamed defended the reshuffle. He warned that party discipline remains non-negotiable. According to him, any member defying the party line risks losing committee privileges.
“Your party decides which committee you serve,” Junet emphasized.
He further stated that disciplinary measures will apply firmly and consistently.
Kimani Ichung’wah Distances Himself
At the same time, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah dismissed claims linking him to Omondi’s ouster.
He clarified that he does not interfere with opposition affairs. Instead, he focuses strictly on majority leadership responsibilities.
Other ODM Leaders Affected
Additionally, Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga was moved from the Agriculture Committee. She now serves in the Members’ Services and Facilities Committee.
Recently, Odinga criticized the broad-based government. She also openly supported ODM’s dismissed Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.
Elsewhere, Kitutu Chache South MP Antony Kibagendi lost his slot in the Public Investments Committee on Governance and Education. Newly elected Kasipul MP Boyd Were replaced him.
Political Tensions Ahead of 2027
Overall, the committee shake-up highlights deep divisions within ODM.
As 2027 approaches, internal discipline and political loyalty appear increasingly decisive. Therefore, further realignments within Parliament remain highly likely.
