Sonko Revives Career with New NEDP Party

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko achieved a major political milestone: his new party, NEDP, gained formal approval. Consequently, this registration signals a significant recovery for his political career toward the 2027 elections.

Sonko Secures NEDP Certificate
Sonko personally received the NEDP certificate Tuesday morning at the ORPP headquarters. Accompanied by key supporters, Sonko arrived at the ORPP offices. Subsequently, the Registrar officially handed over the certificate. This registration confirms that Sonko’s party met all legal requirements. Therefore, NEDP can now participate fully in the country’s politics.

The Road Ahead for 2027
Sonko plans to use NEDP as the main vehicle for his political future. While he is seen as the leader, NEDP will formally install him in early 2026. However, his visibility remained low after his 2020 impeachment as Governor.

Overcoming Past Political Setbacks
The Senate removed Sonko from office in 2020 for misconduct and corruption. The Supreme Court later upheld this decision. This impeachment barred him from holding any political seat. Furthermore, a major fallout with former President Kenyatta contributed to his downfall. Crucially, NEDP’s registration now gives Sonko a new platform to revive his career for the 2027 elections.

ORPP Welcomes New Parties
NEDP was among several new parties recently submitted to the ORPP for approval. Other parties included PEC and USAP. In addition, the ORPP urged the public to submit reservations about the new parties within seven days.
