The 41-year-old will hand over Portugal’s number seven shirt after the November international break, ending a record-breaking national team career.

Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his Portugal retirement after 23 years, confirming his decision in an Instagram video on Thursday. The 41-year-old said he would hand over the national team’s number seven shirt after the November international break.

The Al-Nassr forward has made 234 international appearances and scored 146 goals since his senior debut in 2003. Both totals stand as records in men’s international football.

In his farewell message, Ronaldo reflected on the responsibility of representing Portugal for more than two decades. He also thanked his teammates, coaches, family and supporters for their part in his journey.

Portugal retirement follows record-breaking career

Ronaldo’s international career included five World Cups and six European Championships, alongside two major tournament victories. He captained Portugal to the 2016 European Championship title in France, the country’s first major international trophy.

Three years later, he also helped Portugal win the inaugural UEFA Nations League. Earlier in his career, he reached the Euro 2004 final, where Portugal lost to Greece.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said he would leave with pride, believing he had given everything for his country. While reflecting on his achievements, he placed the connection with supporters above goals, trophies and records.

Ronaldo also described representing Portugal as his greatest achievement, despite spending his career striving to become the world’s best player. He ended his message by thanking the country for its belief in him throughout those 23 years.

Announcement follows dispute with Jorge Jesus

Meanwhile, the decision comes weeks after Ronaldo’s public disagreement with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus. The dispute followed his departure from the national team’s training camp in September.

Ronaldo left after remaining unused during a Nations League victory over Norway. He subsequently accused Jesus of breaking promises about his role, although he maintained that he remained available for selection.

The Portuguese Football Federation later imposed a 30-day suspension following disciplinary proceedings over his departure. However, that punishment does not prevent him from playing in the November fixtures.

Portugal had also included Ronaldo in its preliminary squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales. The final squad announcement is expected on Friday.
