KNBS records sexual activity among 47 per cent of women aged 15–49, while only about one-third report condom use during their last sexual encounter.
A Kenya health survey has found that 47 per cent of women aged 15–49 had sex in the preceding four weeks. However, only about one-third of women reported condom use during their last sexual encounter.
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) conducted the 2025–26 Kenya Mini Demographic and Health Survey. Its findings also show that women begin having sex at a median age of 18.
Among women aged 25–49, three in 20 reported their first sexual encounter before turning 15. Meanwhile, half of women in that age group had first had sex by age 18.
Kenya health survey highlights teenage sexual health
Among younger women aged 15–24, 22 per cent reported sex with a non-cohabiting partner in the previous 12 months. KNBS said the findings raise questions about teenage sexual health and early exposure to sexual activity. They also highlight the need for stronger reproductive health education among young people.
The survey covered a nationally representative sample of 29,935 households. Data collection ran from 5 November 2025 to 10 February 2026.
KNBS Director General Macdonald Obudho said the survey offers timely updates between full survey rounds. It tracks key demographic, nutrition and health indicators.
He also said the findings would guide population, health and development programmes at national and county levels. That includes programme design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
