Mike Sonko’s youngest daughter has chosen Karura over Kitisuru for her political debut, with youth opportunities, women’s economic support and public services among her priorities.
Sandra Mbuvi, the youngest daughter of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, has announced plans to contest the Karura Ward Member of County Assembly seat in Westlands during the 2027 General Election.
The UK-based university student intends to run on the National Economic Development Party (NEDP) ticket. The party is led by her father, and her declaration adds another member of the Sonko family to its prospective Nairobi line-up.
Popularly known as Thicky Sandra, Mbuvi is making her first move into electoral politics with a campaign centred on community needs, economic opportunities and access to public services.
Why Sandra Chose Karura Ward
Mbuvi had initially considered seeking the MCA seat in neighbouring Kitisuru Ward before settling on Karura. Explaining the change, she said her choice was intended to help her build a closer relationship with residents and respond directly to their priorities.
The decision places Karura at the centre of her political debut. Her stated agenda combines support for young people and women with improvements in healthcare, education and accountability in administration.
For young residents, she has identified expanding opportunities as a priority. Her plans also emphasise economic support for women, alongside better access to essential healthcare services and educational advancement.
Administrative accountability is another part of the platform she has outlined, bringing governance concerns into a campaign that also focuses on household and community needs.
Political Debut Draws Mixed Reactions
The announcement prompted discussion on social media, where reactions ranged from expressions of support to jokes and questions about her preparedness for public office.
That response reflects the attention surrounding her move from a public profile as Sonko’s daughter into a bid for an elected position. Supporters welcomed her ambitions, while other commenters questioned her readiness to take on the responsibilities of representing a ward.
Her declaration sets out both the seat she wants to pursue and the party banner she intends to use ahead of the 2027 polls.
Sonko Family’s Wider Nairobi Ambitions
Sandra’s announcement follows a separate declaration by her older sister, Saumu Mbuvi, who revealed on September 21 that she intends to contest the Nairobi County Woman Representative seat under NEDP.
Saumu has identified youth employment, women’s enterprise, skills development and urban social protection programmes as priorities. The sisters’ stated agendas share an emphasis on economic opportunities for young people and women, although they are seeking different offices.
Dancehall artist KRG The Don is also pursuing the Nairobi Senate seat on the same party ticket. Together, the declared ambitions point to an emerging NEDP electoral push across the capital, with Sandra seeking to establish her place in ward-level politics.
