Mason Greenwood Marseille: De Zerbi Stands by Forward Ahead of Newcastle Clash
De Zerbi Backs Greenwood Ahead of Champions League Clash
Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi says Mason Greenwood “paid dearly” after sexual assault allegations. The forward prepares to face English opposition for the first time since the case closed.
Marseille host Newcastle in the Champions League on Tuesday, with Greenwood expected to start.
Greenwood left Manchester United in January 2022 after allegations of attempted rape and sexual assault. Prosecutors later dropped all charges in February 2023. In July 2024, he joined Marseille following a loan at Spanish club Getafe, sparking debate across Europe.
De Zerbi supports Greenwood
De Zerbi told reporters on Monday that he avoids commenting on Greenwood’s private life.
“I know Mason is a good lad,” he said. “He paid dearly for what happened and found the environment he needed here. I regret what happened because I know a different side of him, especially compared to how he’s portrayed in England.”
Greenwood has scored 33 goals for Marseille, including 11 this season. De Zerbi praised his growth.
“Greenwood is improving. We must support him, but the effort comes from him. He’s becoming a complete player.”

England return still uncertain
Greenwood, capped once for England at 19, plays alongside compatriots Angel Gomes and CJ Egan-Riley in France. England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed in September that Greenwood is not in his current plans.
Gomes, a former Manchester United teammate, said he does not know whether Greenwood hopes for an England recall ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
“I haven’t spoken to Mason about his goals,” Gomes said. “We talk about Call of Duty, FIFA, and football, but not personal ambitions. When he’s on the pitch, he enjoys himself, and as a teammate and friend, it’s great to see.”
Marseille struggle in Europe
Marseille have three points from four Champions League matches. Greenwood has scored once in the competition, and the team sits outside the knock-out spots.
Newcastle arrive in strong form. After losing to Barcelona in their opener, they have won three consecutive matches, sitting sixth in the group.
