Kalonzo Musyoka appoints Fred Matiang’i as chairman and James Orengo as co-chair as opposition leaders organise ahead of the 2027 election.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has named Fred Matiang’i chairman of the Ukombozi Alliance Council, with James Orengo as co-chair. The appointments come as opposition leaders reorganise ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Kalonzo announced the appointments on Wednesday, November 5, at Kisumu International Airport. He was beginning a tour of Migori and Homa Bay counties.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders continue to explore competing political formations and possible presidential arrangements. Kalonzo dismissed suggestions of division, saying the emerging coalition united leaders committed to challenging President William Ruto.

Ukombozi Alliance Council leadership takes shape

Kalonzo said the two appointees would help guide the alliance’s political direction. He also cited their experience and national standing as reasons for choosing them.

Matiang’i previously served as Interior Cabinet Secretary, while Orengo is the governor of Siaya. Kalonzo praised Matiang’i’s understanding of government operations and ability to deliver services. He also highlighted Orengo’s record of defending the Constitution during difficult periods.

Despite questions about opposition disagreements, Kalonzo maintained that the leaders would approach voters together. He described the movement as a broad alliance pursuing a shared political objective.

The Wiper leader also presented the appointments as part of preparations for the work ahead. His remarks emphasised cooperation as the alliance seeks to bring opposition parties together for a challenge to Ruto.

Rebranding and registration process

The appointments follow the September 21 rebranding of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition as the Ukombozi Alliance. At the time, Kalonzo said coalition leaders had unanimously agreed to adopt the new name.

He said the change aimed to create a fresh political identity and a more coordinated structure before the 2027 elections. The council appointments now add to that leadership restructuring.

The formation subsequently secured a legal reprieve from the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal. The tribunal lifted orders that had suspended its registration process.

Those proceedings involved Allan Jayuga Akivaga, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties and the Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya. As a result, the registrar could proceed with registration under the Political Parties Act.

Alongside the restructuring, the alliance aims to widen cooperation among opposition parties. Political leaders also continue consultations on a possible joint challenge to Ruto in the next General Election.
