Wicknell Chivayo, popularly known as Sir Wicknell
Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo rose from a difficult childhood to become one of Africa’s most talked-about tycoons.
Popularly known as “Sir Wicknell,” Chivayo built a public image around business, luxury and philanthropy. However, his career also attracted legal battles and scrutiny over government-linked contracts.
His journey ended tragically on September 30, 2026, when a helicopter carrying him and his wife, Lucy Muteke, crashed in Marondera Rural, Zimbabwe.
The crash killed six people aboard the aircraft, according to Zimbabwean police. Chivayo was 43.
From Chivhu to the Business World
Chivayo was born on November 22, 1982, in the Gandami area of Chivhu, Zimbabwe.
He lost his father when he was about 10 years old. His mother subsequently raised him as the family faced financial difficulties.
Those challenges forced Chivayo to leave school while in Form Two. At 15, he reportedly found work as a wages clerk at a local bus company.
He later entered the foreign-currency trade before moving into larger business ventures. Chivayo eventually became associated with Intratrek Zimbabwe, an energy and infrastructure company.
Business Deals and Legal Battles
Intratrek became closely associated with major government-linked projects in Zimbabwe.
One of the company’s best-known deals was the Gwanda Solar Project, valued at about $172 million. The project later attracted scrutiny over payments, delays and its implementation.
Chivayo faced legal proceedings linked to allegations involving fraud and money laundering. However, he maintained his innocence and was later acquitted in a major fraud case.
His business career therefore remained a subject of both commercial interest and public debate.
The Rise of Sir Wicknell
Chivayo became particularly popular through social media, where he showcased an extravagant lifestyle.
His posts frequently featured luxury cars, private aircraft, expensive properties and large cash displays. He also became known for giving expensive gifts to musicians, athletes and other public figures.
His philanthropic activities attracted significant attention across Zimbabwe. At the same time, his public spending generated debate about the source of his wealth and the relationship between business and political influence.
Chivayo described himself as a successful businessman and philanthropist. Critics, meanwhile, questioned aspects of his wealth and connections.
Political Connections and Regional Influence
Chivayo also developed strong public links with Zimbabwe’s political establishment.
He was closely associated with President Emmerson Mnangagwa and became known for his support of Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party.
His network later extended beyond Zimbabwe. He developed relationships with political and business figures in several African countries.
His appearances alongside Kenyan President William Ruto also attracted attention in Kenya. Chivayo was subsequently linked to business interests and major infrastructure discussions in the country.
A Final Flight
Chivayo’s life came to a sudden end on September 30, 2026.
The helicopter crashed at Kudenga Farm in Marondera, about 40 minutes after leaving Gandami in Chikomba. Chivayo and Lucy were reportedly working on their rural home in the area.
Zimbabwean authorities confirmed that six people were aboard the helicopter. There were no survivors.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe later recovered the aircraft’s black box. Officials said the crash cause had not yet been established as investigations continued.
A Complicated Legacy
Wicknell Chivayo leaves behind a public record marked by business success, luxury, philanthropy and controversy.
Supporters highlighted his generosity and rise from difficult circumstances. Critics focused on his government connections, business controversies and lavish lifestyle.
His sudden death has therefore closed a remarkable chapter in Zimbabwe’s business story. However, questions surrounding his business career and the helicopter crash remain subjects of public interest.
For now, investigators continue examining the final moments of his flight. Meanwhile, his family and Zimbabweans mourn the businessman popularly known as “Sir Wicknell.”
