Meta Platforms Restore Services After Major Global Outage
Social media platforms owned by Meta Platforms have largely recovered after a widespread outage.
The disruption affected Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger on March 3, 2026. Millions of users worldwide lost access during peak afternoon hours in the United States.
Users Logged Out Without Warning
The outage began suddenly, forcing users out of their accounts. Many received messages stating their access was unavailable due to a site issue. As a result, confusion spread quickly across multiple regions.
At its peak, Downdetector recorded hundreds of thousands of incident reports. Although the United States logged over 11,000 reports, the disruption extended globally.
Regions affected included Malaysia, the United Kingdom, and other international markets.
Key Services Disrupted
Facebook users reported expired sessions and login failures. Meanwhile, Instagram users encountered blank feeds and repeated error messages.
Additionally, Meta’s Ads Manager experienced significant disruptions. Consequently, businesses running global advertising campaigns faced temporary setbacks.
What Caused the Outage?
Meta attributed the disruption to an internal technical issue. However, the company did not immediately disclose detailed root causes.
Internet monitoring group NetBlocks confirmed the outage stemmed from Meta’s infrastructure. Importantly, investigators found no evidence of cyberattacks or government interference.
The incident mirrors previous outages, including a six-hour shutdown in 2021.
Current Status and User Guidance
As of March 4, 2026, services have largely stabilized. Nevertheless, some users may still experience intermittent slowdowns.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone confirmed teams acted quickly to restore services. Most accounts have automatically recovered without user action. If errors persist, users should wait briefly before retrying login attempts.
For real-time updates, users can check Meta’s official status page or Downdetector.
