Sonko Pledges Burial Support for Nairobi Flood Victims
Mike Sonko has pledged to support families who lost loved ones during the recent Nairobi floods. The former Nairobi governor promised to cover burial expenses for identified victims.
Authorities confirmed that at least 27 bodies have been identified in city mortuaries. Consequently, the humanitarian pledge aims to ease the burden on grieving families.
Sonko announced the initiative through his volunteer unit, the Sonko Rescue Team. The group has frequently responded to emergencies and humanitarian crises across Nairobi.
Support for Families of Flood Victims
Through the Sonko Rescue Team, Sonko outlined several forms of assistance.
First, the team will provide coffins and caskets for victims currently held in city mortuaries. Additionally, the initiative will help transport bodies and family members to rural homes. This transport support will apply to burials in any region across the country.
Furthermore, the program will assist families in clearing pending hospital or mortuary bills. Many affected households struggled with unexpected expenses following the disaster. Therefore, the intervention aims to reduce financial pressure during mourning.
Coordination at Nairobi City Mortuary
The Sonko Rescue Team scheduled coordination efforts beginning March 11, 2026. Volunteers will work directly with families at Nairobi City Mortuary. There, they will verify victims’ details and organize burial logistics.
Moreover, the team will guide relatives through documentation and transportation arrangements. These efforts intend to ensure dignified burials for flood victims.
At the same time, the team will provide emotional support to affected families.
